Does 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner Contain Bleach?

30 SECONDS vs Bleach

30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner does not contain regular household bleach.

This common misconception comes up from time to time, since 30 SECONDS is a Sodium Hypochlorite based product. People often think our outdoor cleaner will act like a regular household bleach. We have even had customers do trials for us, because they were so dubious (or suspicious?)

The picture to the left is an actual picture submitted by a customer who tested our product against household bleach.  The results are clear to see!

Our formulation designed to:

  • deep clean
  • be safe to use around your lawns and landscaping
  • be easy to use

There is a reason why we have been so popular since 1977. It works. And you get instant gratification!

So why is it different from household bleach? Clorox isn 6 % sodium hypochlorite, yours is 5%. What are the “inert ingredients”? is that what makes it more safe for pets etc.? please explain…. yes I am suspicious after reading the label so want to know how it is different.

Jill Collier

May 21, 2015

Carolyn, thanks for the question! You can see how much cleaner 30 SECONDS has cleaned this customer’s deck. It is formulated to do a deep clean. I think it’s great to be suspicious, which is why this particular customer, shown in our blog, decided to do his own trial. He too was doubtful. And now very happy.

I bought this to clean up the white pebbles and also the pavers around the pool. It sure smells like bleach, has the same viscosity as bleach and appears to do the same job as bleach, the only difference so far is that I could have actually bought bleach at an eighth of the cost. Sodium Hypochlorite – household bleach.

Jill Collier

October 23, 2015

Yes, Lynne, this question often comes up. 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is a Sodium Hypochlorite based cleaner. However, our formula is much more industrial strength to deep clean all your stains from algae, mold and mildew.
We often have customers looking for bargains but quickly discover that 30 SECONDS is worth every penny.
We have many before and after pictures on our main web page that show customer comparisons – I encourage you to explore this and other info on our site.

I am considering using on canvas flys on our campervan but concerned this product will damage it. Can you guarantee this will not be the case?

Jessica Merly

September 20, 2016

Hi Kellie, I understand your concern about using our product on your canvas flies on your camper. Our 30 SECONDS outdoor cleaners are made to be safe to use on most outdoor surfaces, including canvas. However, we always recommend to test a small inconspicuous area first to make sure that the surface you’re using the cleaner on is colorfast. We guarantee that the product works and that you will be totally happy with the way 30 SECONDS cleans. If you are nervous about your particular canvas then I would suggest contacting the manufacturer of your camper. Tell them that you want to use a bleach based cleaner. They are really a much more reliable source for your specific project.
If you do choose to use 30 SECONDS then the best thing to do is rinse, rinse, rinse in all the nooks and crannies, once you are done cleaning.

Jessica Merly

September 20, 2016

Nathaniel, the main ingredient in our Outdoor Cleaner is our proprietary Industrial Sodium Hypochlorite which works in conjunction with the powdered soaps that let our product get deep into the stone to root out and remove the stains of algae, mold, and mildew.

Is it safe for travertine pavers?

Jessica Merly

October 06, 2016

Kevin, when in doubt it is always a good idea to test in a small, inconspicuous area, however you should be fine using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner on your travertine pavers.

Is this safe to use near septic field?

Kris butler

March 24, 2017

I was told not to use 39 secondvon housr or drive as it will kill my plants.

Jessica Merly

March 27, 2017

Hi Judy,

We would like a little more information to properly answer your question about using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner. In general, 30 SECONDS Cleaners breaks down readily in the soil, and so should be okay over a “leaching field.” However, if there is standing water involved in the septic field, then probably not. 30 SECONDS should be kept out of waterways and may upset the pH and/or microbes used for breaking down waist. If this doesn’t answer your question, I’d invite you to call us directly for a more accurate answer, 503-669-1953. Cheers!

Jessica Merly

March 27, 2017

Kris, we are not sure where you heard that 30 SECONDS would harm your plants, but you’re in luck! 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is safe around your plants. So much so, that it even says “Safe around your yard, plants and lawn” right on the front label. So feel free to clean both your house and your drive knowing that your landscaping is safe.

PJ

After the product cleans will it leave any type of prevention to keep the quick return of the mildew?

Jessica Merly

April 18, 2017

Great question, PJ! 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner does deep clean to remove the spores of Algae, Mold and Mildew, giving you longer lasting results that surface cleaners alone.

That being said, if you’re looking to really preserve the results from you cleaning, consider applying a treatment such as our Spray & Walk Away. This overtime treatment kills Lichen, Moss, Mildew and Algae and helps prevent growth from returning. Find out more about that here https://30secondscleaners.com/products/spray-walk-away. Cheers!

We were wondering if 30 Seconds will work on our rubberized pool deck.

Jessica Merly

May 01, 2017

Linda, thanks for asking if you can use 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner on your rubberized pool deck. Our Outdoor Cleaner is safe on just all outdoor surfaces, including most rubberized pool decks. Of course when using a new cleaner it’s always a good idea to do your due diligence. If possible, we recommend you contact the manufacturer of the deck and insure that its compatible with a Sodium Hypochlorite based product. If that information isn’t available to you, you can always test in a small area first. allow the cleaner to sit at least 5 minutes, wash away completely and let dry. If all looks well, you’re good to go on the rest of the deck. Cheers!

I have a white fiberglass boat. Is the product safe to use on it to remove dirt and grime?

Jessica Merly

June 22, 2017

Hello Deb, Great question about your boat. 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is made to be safe on most all outdoor surfaces. We do encourage you to test it in a small, inconspicuous area first if it’s the first time to clean a new surface.
Also, please make sure that you’re washing the boat on land. While our cleaner breaks down readily in the soil, we do ask that you keep it out of waterways.
Thank you!

Can you use this product to remove moss and algae from your roof specifically those with asphalt singles?

Jessica Merly

July 19, 2017

Laura, Its always a good idea to test in a small, inconspicuous space first, but Yes! 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is made to be safe on asphalt shingles. Make sure that you heavily saturate the surface as those porous shingles can be difficult to fully clean. Cheers!

Deb

July 21, 2017

30 seconds cleaner did wonders on the boat. It’s clean and bright.

I have another question. Can 30 seconds cleaner be used to treat lichens (black spots) on sandstone?

Jessica Merly

July 21, 2017

Hi Deb, good question about the lichen. 30 SECONDS Outdoor cleaner may help to remove some of it, but for the best results we recommend our outdoor treatment, Spray & Walk Away. This will actually kill the lichen and then use the weather to erode it over time. While it won’t get you instant results, it will have a better long term effect in treating and removing the lichen.

Dave

December 01, 2017

I just used 30 Seconds on a deck, patio, and stairs. Yes, it worked great, but really, judging from the MSDS, 30 Seconds is just the bleaching agent found in common household bleach (sodium hypochorite) with a dash of secret sauce—tri-basic sodium phosphate dodeahydrate, aka TSP. You could try mixing your own version, but I’m willing to pay for the convenience of a well-formulated, hassle-free product. Also, real TSP is nasty stuff, and I don’t think it’s easily available anymore. At least not in my state (Oregon). TSP/90, sold by my local Ace Hardware, is not real TSP.

Will it hurt the threads on boat seats

Jessica Merly

December 04, 2017

Hi Dave,
We are so happy that you were pleased with the results of using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner on your deck, patio and stairs.
You’re correct, its the combination of Sodium Hypochlorite and our “secret sauce” that makes us the Original and still
Fast, easy results is what 30 SECONDS is all about. The Sodium Hypochlorite we use is not the same as the regular over the counter bleach, however, and this is why it is safe around your plants.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Cheers!

Jessica Merly

December 04, 2017

Michael, we would recommend that you test a small inconspicuous area on the boat seats first. Simply apply a couple drops and rinse after 5 minutes. This will test whether or not any discoloration will occur during use. Thank you for your question.

Dave

December 07, 2017

AFAIK there is only one kind of sodium hypochlorite—NaClO. It’s amusing that 30 Seconds representatives find it necessary to insist otherwise. Sure, the concentration might be different, and household bleach can also contain NaOH, which I assume 30 Seconds does not, but there really is no point to these word games—in fact, I am less inclined to buy the product when I see that kind of marketing.

Jessica Merly

December 13, 2017

Thank you for sharing your input, Dave. Believe it or not, there actually is more than just one kind of Sodium Hypochlorite. Over the counter bleach is also often labeled as Sodium Hypochlorite, but using this would be harmful to the plants around the area that you clean, unlike our product. It is because of this very important difference that we say we are not the same as regular bleach.
We endeavor to be open and honest with our customers, and stand behind our product 100%. We hope that you will be willing to try 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner for yourself. Cheers!

Is this product safe for use around plants that produce fruit and vegetables (veggie gardens, fruit trees etc?). I want to use it on my deck but my veggie garden is below. Thanks!

Jessica Merly

May 10, 2018

Hello Heather,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner breaks down readily in the soil and so it will not harm the root system of your plants and garden. We would recommend rinsing the plants down before and after to prevent any sun spots on the foliage.

Is it safe to use this product on deck stain {single coat} that was applied 12 months ago; it is high quality clear coat semi transparent deck stain applied to a western red cedar wooden deck? The life of a quality deck stain is not very long, about 2 years, my concern is if your product will shorten the lifespan of the stain?

Ashley

May 22, 2018

My mom mixed the 30 Seconds Cleaner into a water pitcher. A day later, I used that same pitcher to water my vegetable starts. Did I just poison my starters? They haven’t been planted into my garden yet, only in the plastic starter containers. Thank you!

Jessica Merly

May 22, 2018

Hi Lorne,

We would recommend testing first before cleaning your deck. Apply a few drops to an inconspicuous area, let sit about 5 minutes, and rinse the area to see results. Sometimes, stained wood can sometimes become blotchy in appearance if the stain wasn’t properly applied. This is remedied by re-staining the deck if it does happen.

Jessica Merly

May 22, 2018

Hi Laura,
We would recommend you test both surfaces before cleaning. While they should be colorfast materials, being on a boat, it’s always a good idea to test first.

Jessica Merly

May 22, 2018

Hi Jack,

30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner breaks down readily in the soil and won’t hard the root system of your plants. We do ask that you rinse plants within 10 minutes if they get over spray on them, just as you would wash your hands if you got cleaner on them. If you allow the Outdoor Cleaner to sit on leaves overnight, you may see some sun spotting the next day. It’s not pretty, but it won’t kill the plant.

Jessica Merly

May 22, 2018

Hi Ashley,

How are your starts? We think they should be fine, especially if your mother rinsed the container after using it. If you’re concerned, you could gently wet down all the foliage to make sure no cleaner has dried on them. Since the container was dry by the time you used it, it’s unlikely to have any effect on your plants. It also breaks down readily in the soil and so it won’t harm any roots on your seedlings. Happy gardening!

Can I spray my ground Moss with 30 seconds and expect it to treat and eliminate the moss.

Deanna Rhodes

May 30, 2018

I love this product. I’m going to get 3 more gallons this weekend. I had some of the worst algae and dirt embedded in my 22 year old deck and its cleaning the wood like it’s brand new (without splinters from powerwashing). I read that someone said it bleached her wood. I found that in some areas my wood did appear to be whitened but as I hosed it off using the stream spray setting on my hose, the white disappeared and the wood color appeared. I don’t know if it dried before I rinsed but the product was amazing AND most importantly I did not have bleach spot accidents which I’m sure I would have had using 100% household bleach. Maybe I was lucky but I used a scrub brush on the rails and there was splatter but no bleach spots on my clothes.

Jessica Merly

May 30, 2018

Hello Rick,
There are other products made to treat ground moss that will get you more effective results. Thank you for thinking of us, though!

Jessica Merly

May 30, 2018

I rarely write or post a review about anything but
This product did such an amazing job on my asphalt composition roof that was so bad with algae and black streaks that I was considering replacing the entire roof
The roof now looks honestly brand new.
I have tried homemade versions of bleach and water and have not gotten anywhere the same results. I have been raving to everyone about this stuff and am thrilled about not having to replace the roof anytime soon.

How is this different from the stronger “cleaning vinegar”?

Dawn

July 24, 2018

Love the product, worked great on my vinyl siding. Can this be used on a tub enclosure?

Jessica Merly

July 24, 2018

Great question, George. While we haven’t done a side by side comparison with cleaning vinegar, in general it is used to clean quite a bit differently than products like our Outdoor Cleaner. Choosing the right cleaner is important for any project, and there are situations where cleaning vinegar may well be a better choice, such as indoor cleaning or removing hard water stains. When it comes to removing stains from Algae, Mold, and Mildew, however, 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is the fastest, easiest outdoor cleaner on the market.

I have hard water stains on a newer screen from the well water irrigation sprinklers..would your product clean them?

Jessica Merly

September 17, 2018

Thank you for contacting us about using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner on hard water stains. While our cleaner works great on organic stains, unfortunately it won’t do much against hard water, rust, or mineral build up stains in general. We do not currently make a cleaner ideal for this sort of project. Best of luck!

November 02, 2018

Hi there,
My name is Chris and I’m 9 years old.
Considering Sodium Hypochlorite is basically bleach and bleach is very toxic how can this be good to let run down the drain and into the sea.
I thought we were a sea loving people here in NZ, we love the beaches and care for our whales and dolphins.
When I went to the hardware your product was everywhere so I am thinking that everyone is using this.
I can imagine hundreds of people using this and bleach pouring into the sea.
How can you let this happen?
Can you please change to whale and dolphin safe chemicals please?

November 02, 2018

Hi,

Can you please tell me your instructions for cleaning a raw, 3 year old dirty cedar picket fence before I stain it for the first time with Benjamin Moore semi-transparent stain? I heard that I should use your product once, then clean with water and reapply your product again and leave it on without rinsing before I apply the fresh stain, to prevent future mildew recurring?
Is this correct?

Jessica Merly

November 02, 2018

Thank you for sharing, Diego! We love hearing from our fans.
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is made to be safe on most all outdoor surfaces, including vinyl cushions and fiberglass on a boat. We do always encourage testing when cleaning a new surface for the first time, though. Simply apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area, let sit about 5 minutes, and rinse to see results. Cheers!

Jessica Merly

November 02, 2018

Hello Chris,
Thank you for contacting 30 SECONDS Cleaners about the Sodium Hypochlorite in our product. For questions and concerns regarding distribution in New Zealand, please contact them at 30seconds@xtra.co.nz, or from their website, www.30seconds.net.nz.
As far as the formula here in the United States, our product contains Sodium Hypochlorite that has 70% less salts than regular over the counter bleach, so it breaks down readily in the soil. This is why it doesn’t harm plants or landscaping as well! We also say on the bottle to not rinse it directly into waterways. So long as the product is rinsed into land, and not directly into waterways as stated, there is no harm done to the oceans. We, too, value or natural resources and as long as our cleaner is used as instructed, no harm will come to the local flora and fauna.
Thank you so much for your question and giving us the opportunity to put your mind at ease about using our product.

Jessica Merly

November 02, 2018

Hello Peggy,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is not intended as a pesticide. While it certainly won’t make any wood boring insects happy, it won’t kill them off in the way that you’re intending. We would recommend getting advice from your favorite Home and Garden store for the best option for your situation. Best of luck!

Jessica Merly

November 02, 2018

Hello James,
Thank you for contacting us about using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner on your raw cedar fence.
We do encourage testing when cleaning a surface for the first time. Simply apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area, let sit about 5 minutes, and rinse to see results.
We do not encourage leaving our outdoor cleaner to dry on a surface. If a second clean is needed, you’ll still want to rinse and let dry completely prior to staining, based on the instructions on the stain.

It is watered down bleach , hence why they will not respond when people say it is bleach on here. Stop being ripped off, water down bleach as it is alkaline and test on a small patch, if it works go nuts, alternatively use white vinegar which is an acid and will knock over about 80% of algaes/moss and very cheap. 30 second rip off

Garry Giroux

Tried it in small section of my rubber EPDM roof on my rv and it worked really well but wondering about long term effect on rubber?

Jessica Merly

December 05, 2018

Hi Craig,
We do try do our best to always respond promptly to all comments, including yours. If you’re seeing one that we miss, our apologies to you and the person who asked!

We invite you to do your own side by side comparison and see that 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is far more effective than watered down bleach. In fact, a recent customer video on Facebook called us “life changing!” There may be cheaper options, but there is not a more effective one. Come see why we are the Original and Still the Best since 1977. Cheers!

Jessica Merly

December 05, 2018

Hello Garry,

Thank you for asking about long term effects. Our cleaner is intended to be rinsed off completely. Once this happens, not further results, good or bad, will occur. If all goes well with your test, then you and your EPDM roof will be just fine.

March 04, 2019

Hello Dave,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is best applied on a cool, overcast day. We would not recommend cleaning if it is below freezing outside. Hot temperatures will increase evaporation and extra cleaner will need to be applied.

Jessica Merly

March 15, 2019

Can you use this prouduct with a power washer if it has bleach than no but you claim it doesn’t have bleach so is safe to use

Jessica Merly

April 01, 2019

Hello Geroge,
We do not recommend using 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner with a power washer. The power washer will over dilute the cleaner and not allow it to properly pool on the surface as intended to let it clean.
If your power washer isn’t compatible with sodium hypochlorite based cleaners, then you shouldn’t use 30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner. Sounds like we are on the same page!

Jessica Merly

May 02, 2019

Hi Dave,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner will start to lose efficacy over time. It has right about a 2-year shelf life. Your bottle should be okay. You can allow for a little extra soaking time if it seems to not be doing as well as you remember.

I have told everyone I know about your product. I’ve even given out a gallon here and there to my friends. I’m sure that sales in Maryland have sky rocketed. I have only one question, where’s my commission? Ok seriously….. rock solid product and for vinyl siding, Trex type deck, post and railings, etc your product can’t be beat.
Trust me I’ve tried many and I was completely impressed by your product. Only problem is that I think my great grandmother may have invented this in 1932 and you guys pirated her product. I meet with a medium this afternoon and if she can reach old granny to confirm, a law suit may be forthcoming.
All kidding aside I give your product an A++.

One last question, out of curiosity can you transform your product to a granular form without great impact on price? Seems that shipping and storage would benefit as well as sales. Or have you? Have your chemist call my chemist and we’ll do lunch. (I really don’t have a chemist 😊)

Sincerely,
A loyal customer

Is 30seconds safe to use around a pool? Will it affect the chemicals in the pool?

Jessica Merly

August 19, 2019

Hello Louise,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is made to be safe on most all outdoor surfaces including screen enclosures. Yes, it will clean those stains right off! We do always recommend testing in a small, inconspicuous area first. Spray a small amount of cleaner, let sit 5 minutes, and rinse to see results.

Jessica Merly

September 11, 2019

Hello Linda,
30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner is safe to use around pools. It’s best to minimize the amount that gets into the water, and we encourage rinsing away from the pool as much to keep out the stains that are being cleaned as the cleaner itself. Do check the pH levels after cleaning and prior to swimming.

This helped some algae spots on my stucco some, but didn’t touch the dyed mulch stains caused by our landscaper piling mulch up against our stucco walls. I used the hose connection version on mostly dry stucco and let sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinsed with both hose and 2000psi power washer. Is the concentrate stronger than the hose connection type, and do you have any tips on how to use it to remove the black mulch staining on our stucco? Thanks!

Can you use 30 sec in the dishwasher??

Jessica Merly

November 19, 2019

Hello Jennifer,
Yes, stains from dyed mulch are a bit different from the satins from Algae, Mold and Mildew. A quick search shows couple of different DIY options as well as some degreaser cleaners that are more effective at removing the dye. We would also recommend asking a sales associate at your favorite Home & Garden store as they have lots of feedback from customers. Sorry we couldn’t help with this type of staining.

Jessica Merly

November 19, 2019

Hello Tara,
Sorry, but we wouldn’t recommend using30 SECONDS Outdoor Cleaner in the dishwasher.
